Detection of leptospires in clinically healthy piglets born from sows experimentally infected with Leptospira interrogans serovar Canicola BJM
Soto,Francisco Rafael M.; Azevedo,Sérgio Santos de; Morais,Zenaide Maria de; Pinheiro,Sônia Regina; Delbem,Ádina Cléia B.; Moreno,Andréa Micke; Paixão,Renata; Vuaden,Erlete R.; Vasconcellos,Sílvio Arruda.
Leptospirosis is an important zoonosis that causes reproductive disorders in swine. The isolation of leptospires from aborted fetuses, stillbirths and weak piglets was obtained in several occasions, however, the bacteria was never isolated from apparently healthy piglets born from apparently healthy infected dams. Six sows of the Landrace breed with a known date of service and pregnancy confirmed by ultrasonography were infected intravenously with 5ml of Leptospira interrogans serovar Canicola inoculum between 76 and 90 days of gestation, and one week after farrowing, at least one piglet per sow was euthanized and samples of liver, kidneys, lungs, heart, spleen and gastric content were taken and examined by PCR. Reproductive disorders or any clinical sign...

Interactions between environment, wild animals and human leptospirosis J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Ullmann,LS; Langoni,H.
Leptospirosis, a worldwide distributed zoononis caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira (antigenically classified into serovars), may be direct or indirectly transmitted through infected urine or environment. Several domestic and wild animals are leptospirosis reservoirs. The disease presents occupational character since it is widely reported in professionals that work in humid environments - such as sewage workers and fishermen - and in places where rodents or susceptible animals are found, like slaughterhouses and veterinary clinics. In developing countries, outbreaks are related to lack of sanitation, overcrowding in inadequate housing and climatic conditions. In developed countries, sporadic cases occur in aquatic recreational activities including...

Leptospira spp. antibodies in captive coatis (Nasua nasua Storr, 1780) (Carnivora: Procyonidae) J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Langoni,H; Kawaguchi,MF; Oshika,JC; Da Silva,RC; Teixeira,CR.
Leptospirosis is a worldwide infection that affects many species, including wild animals. The present study aimed to detect Leptospira spp. antibodies in 17 captive coatis (Nasua nasua) by the microscopic agglutination test (MAT). Nine (52.94%) animals tested positive and the following serovars were identified: Copenhageni (22.22%), Shermani (22.22%), Andamana (11.11%), Wolfii (11.11%) and Pyrogenes (11.11%). Two samples presented coagglutination, one (11.11%) for Hebdomadis and Wolfii, and another (11.11%) for Hebdomadis, Hardjo and Wolfii. The current study revealed the presence of the infection even in animals without any clinical signs, reinforcing the possibility that wild animals in captivity may be infected by leptospire serovars, thus enabling...

Leptospiral antibodies in wild boars (Sus scrofa) bred in Brazil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Fornazari,F; Camossi,LG; Silva,RC; Guazzelli,A; Ribeiro,MG; Chiacchio,SB; Langoni,H.
In the recent years, the wild boar (Sus scrofa) trade has increased in Brazil. The present study aimed to detect Leptospira spp. infection in 308 blood samples from wild boars bred in São Paulo state, Brazil. The microscopic agglutination test (MAT) was performed using 29 serovars. Sixty three (63; 20.45%) animals tested positive against the serovars Hardjo (29/63; 46.0%), Copenhageni (11/63; 17.4%), Pomona (8/63; 12.7%), Pyrogenes (4/63; 6.3%), Wolfii (4/63; 6.3%), Autumnalis (3/63; 4.7%), Icterohaemorraghiae (2/63; 3.1%), and Hardjo-miniswajezak (1/63; 15.8%). These results indicate that captive wild boars were infected with Leptospira spp. and may represent a source of infection to humans and other animals.

Occurrence and risk factors associated with canine leptospirosis J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Kikuti,M; Langoni,H; Nobrega,DN; Corrêa,APFL; Ullmann,LS.
Leptospirosis is a globally distributed emerging zoonosis. Dogs are commonly affected and although other serovars can cause canine leptospirosis, Leptospira interrogans serovar Canicola is primary found in these animals. A retrospective study was conducted using a database of 1195 dogs tested for Leptospira infection from 2003 to 2010 at the Laboratory of Zoonosis Diagnosis at the Veterinary Hospital of São Paulo State University (UNESP) in Botucatu, São Paulo state, Brazil. The seroprevalence of infected dogs was 20.08% (240/1195), and the most prevalent serovars were Canicola (6.7%), Copenhageni (5.0%), Icterohaemorrhagiae (2.9%), Autumnalis (2.9%), Pyrogenes (2.8%), Pomona (2.0%), Hardjo (2.0%), Australis (1.8%), Bratislava (1.6%), Cynopteri (1.4%),...

ABSTRACT: Leptospirosis is a zoonosis that is widely distributed in tropical countries. This infection is also associated with reproductive losses in livestock, which has a significant economic impact. The objective of this study is to investigate the seroprevalence and risk factors associated with leptospiral infection in commercial sheep flocks from the northwestern mesoregion of Rio Grande do Sul. Serum samples were analyzed in 319 sheep using the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT). At the time of sampling, an individual and herd questionnaire was carried out to investigate the risk factors. On an individual level, positive reactions were observed in 5.6% (18/319) of the studied sera, with Sejroe being the most prevalent serogroup. Animals >3 years...
